Worked example

A post with 420 likes, 35 comments, 18 shares and 27 saves, from 12,000 followers:

Interactions
420 + 35 + 18 + 27 = 500
Engagement rate
500 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 4.17%

The engagement rate formulas

All three methods add up the same interactions and divide by a different audience number:

MethodFormulaBest for
By followersinteractions ÷ followers × 100Comparing accounts, brand pitches
By reachinteractions ÷ accounts reached × 100Judging how well a post landed with the people who saw it
By viewsinteractions ÷ views × 100Reels and video posts

Interactions usually means likes + comments + shares + saves. Some people count only likes and comments; if you compare with someone else's figure, make sure you are using the same formula.

Example: a post with 420 likes, 35 comments, 18 shares and 27 saves has 500 interactions. On an account with 12,000 followers that is 500 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 4.17%. If the post reached 9,000 accounts, the engagement rate by reach is 5.56%.

Which method should you use?

  • By followers is the number brands most often ask for, because follower count is public. It is easy to compare between accounts.
  • By reach shows how compelling the content was for the people who actually saw it. Reach is only visible to the account owner, in Instagram Insights.
  • By views suits Reels, which are often seen mostly by non-followers.

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no universal number. Engagement rates differ by platform, niche, format and account size, and smaller accounts usually see higher rates than very large ones. Rather than chasing an industry average, track your own rate per post format and aim to raise it month over month.

How to improve engagement

  1. Lead with the hook. The first line of a caption or first second of a Reel decides whether people stop.
  2. Ask for a specific action, such as "save this for later" or "comment your answer", rather than a generic "like and follow".
  3. Post saveable content. Checklists, templates and step-by-step carousels earn saves and shares, which tend to count for more than likes.
  4. Reply to comments quickly, especially in the first hour.
  5. Compare formats. Calculate the rate for carousels, Reels and single images separately and post more of what works.

For TikTok, where engagement is usually measured against views, use the TikTok engagement rate calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by followers (or reach or views) and multiply by 100. 500 interactions on an account with 12,000 followers is a 4.17% engagement rate.

Should I divide by followers or reach?

Use followers to compare accounts or pitch brands, and reach to judge how well a post performed with the people who saw it.

Do saves and shares count as engagement?

Yes. Most current formulas include saves and shares as well as likes and comments, because they show stronger interest.

Why is my engagement rate falling as I grow?

It is common for engagement rate by followers to fall as an account gets larger, partly because a smaller share of followers sees each post. Track engagement by reach too, which is less affected by size.

Can I calculate engagement for a whole account?

Yes. Add the interactions from your last 10–20 posts, divide by the number of posts to get an average, then divide by followers.
